Cadeby Christmas lights switch-on

Cadeby neighbours have come up with an idea for celebrating Christmas in a Covid-safe way and are inviting residents to join in.

The plan is to have a co-ordinated community Christmas lights switch-on at 6pm on Saturday 5th December.

Residents planning to put up festive illuminations are invited to coincide with the switch-on - or just to look outside, to enjoy the show.

Cadeby Tree Trust is again kindly donating a tree to the village, which will be put up outside the church, and this will also be lighting up for the first time as part of the switch-on event.

We may be doing Christmas differently this year but, as a community, we still have a lot to celebrate.

As one neighbour said: “We need to make sure that Santa knows that Christmas 2020 in Cadeby is not cancelled!”

Summary of impact on County Council services

Leicestershire County Council have released the following bulletin explaining the impact of the latest Covid restrictions on County Council services.

October 22, 2020

Covid-19 rates continue to rise across the county

Data published by Leicestershire County Council shows that, for the week ending 17th October, every district in the county had rates of over 100 cases for every 100,000 people.

Charnwood’s rate of 293 cases for every 100,000 people is significantly above the national average of 168 while Oadby and Wigston’s latest figures are 259.

The Hinckley and Bosworth figure was  112.9 per 100,000 population

Mike Sandys, director of public health for Leicestershire County Council, says cases are very high in the 17-21s age range while rates among over-60s have trebled since the end of September.

He said: “Mirroring the national figures, we’re seeing steep rises.

“The over-60s rate is an important indicator of likely pressure on the NHS in the weeks to come. Numbers are highest in Charnwood, Oadby and Wigston and Blaby and it’s crucial we stop the spread to people who are more at risk.

“Whatever the restrictions are, it’s important people are sensible. By doing the right thing, we can all play our part to combat this virus. Please continue to wash your hands, keep your social distance and wear a face covering.”

The county council has:
• written to businesses across the county with information and advice to help them ensure that their premises are Covid-19 secure;
• Issued a closure notice to the Black Dog pub in London Road, Oadby, for breaches of the government’s Covid-19 restrictions around pubs and restaurants and
• written to shared homes to provide practical advice

Mike Sandys said: “We’re doing everything we can to curb growing rates. Residents have really stepped up their game – but there is still work to be done as we try to control the spread of the virus. It’s in our own hands locally to keep ourselves and our loved ones, staff and customers safe.”

Businesses can help by:
• Collecting data from customers and visitors and encouraging use of the NHS test and trace app;
• Working with NHS Test and Trace to reduce transmission of the virus;
• Clearly displaying information to staff and customers re-iterating some of the simple actions that we must all do to protect each other – that’s through social distancing, wearing a face mask and washing your hands;
• Advising staff not to car share if possible but if it’s essential to follow safety advice

Councillor Lee Breckon, county council cabinet member for health, said: “I can only echo our director of public health’s take on the current situation – make no mistake this is a crucial phase. And it’s never been more important to follow the national and local guidance.
“By doing so, we can stop cases spreading to our most vulnerable residents.”

District breakdown –
• North West Leicestershire - 110.0 per 100,000 population
• Harborough – 113.0 per 100,000 population
• Hinckley and Bosworth – 112.9 per 100,000 population
• Melton – 125.0 per 100,000 population
• Blaby – 165.5 per 100,000 population
• England – 168.7 per 100,000 population
• Oadby and Wigston – 259.6 per 100,000 population
• Charnwood – 293.2 per 100,000 population

Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards Warning

Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards have received details of a cold calling incident in the Packington area of the county.

Doorstep alert

Reports have been received that rogue traders are currently working in the Packington area. It is likely that they will try to obtain work in surrounding areas of the county, so we are warning residents to be aware.

These traders have been offering to carry out work on properties including jet washing, sealing driveways and property improvements. A verbal price is agreed and payment demanded in cash. This work is often of little value, if required at all.

Please ensure that if you are wanting some work carried out on your property, that you obtain at least 3 quotes, do not agree to any work on your doorstep, obtain full details of the company, the work and price in writing and never pay in cash.

To report an incident or to receive advice and guidance, please call 0808 223 1133. Call 999 in case of an emergency.

Cadeby Litter Pick, Saturday 26th September

We had our first village “event” on Saturday, socially distanced of course!

Around 20 people gathered in the churchyard on a cold and blustery day to gather their black sacks , litter pickers and Hi Vis vests which were kindly loaned by Market Bosworth Rotary Club.

We had a map of the village drawn out, with designated zones for families and friends to follow.  Because of the number of pickers , we were able to cover the whole village and 20 sacks of rubbish were gathered , along with some larger items that wouldn’t fit in sacks.

We learnt from last time and filled sacks were left for Eddie to kindly collect and I went round handing out more sacks and pickers when summoned. It was a very smooth operation!

Amongst the items collected were a collapsed cupboard, a wallet with cards in, a car fender, bottles containing a variety of liquids and  a pack of sausage rolls!

Eliza and Lewis won the children’s prize for finding a road sign, a pair of socks and Eliza‘s lost glove.  It was more difficult selecting who should receive the adult prize, but we decided Liz and Steve deserved it for finding a bed! It’s quite extraordinary what people will dump or throw out of their vehicle window!

All in all, we felt it was a worthwhile afternoon and villagers  appreciated a community activity after so long. Our thanks to all who helped and took part. Thanks also to Eliza for designing and putting up the posters. We are hoping that the Parish Council will purchase our own equipment for the next Litter Pick , Spring 2021.

Cadeby Church Update

It is lovely to have our church open again as is evidenced by positive comments in the Visitors Book.

It is open daily, from around 10am to 6pm, for private prayer with safeguarding and sanitisation covered to the best of our abilities. Our team of volunteer flower arrangers continues to keep the church looking lovely.

We were due to have a Harvest Festival on Sunday September 6th, but, after consultation, we feel that the time isn't right yet for us to hold a public service. We will obviously keep this under review and let you know when things change.

In the meantime, please enjoy our photographs at www.facebook.com/CadebyFete/ and you are welcome to visit any day of the week!

Plans for development of Land South of Station Road in Market Bosworth

A draft masterplan has been drawn up to guide the development of land South of Station Road in Market Bosworth.

The plan follows the statement issued by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, St Peter's Church and Market Bosworth Parish Council in July 2019 confirming their joint commitment to overseeing the development of the land.

Planning consultants, Birmingham-based Define were subsequently appointed and have now created an overall masterplan and development strategy for the site.

The objective is a development of high quality design in keeping with the distinctiveness of the town, with affordable housing well integrated into the scheme, business units for existing and new companies and appropriate community facilities. The plan will be used to secure a developer to ensure completion of the scheme in the next five years.

A draft masterplan is available to view on the Council’s website www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/mbmasterplan. It is intended that formal public consultation on this document will be held later in the year once the current Covid 19 restrictions are sufficiently relaxed. In the meantime anyone who wishes to make any comments is invited to please contact the Borough Council at planningpolicy@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council Chief Executive, Bill Cullen, said “We are pleased to be working in partnership with Market Bosworth Parish Council and St Peter’s Church  in securing a high quality scheme for this proposed major development in Market Bosworth which is an opportunity to bring forward a key development site in the borough.”

Garden waste service update

The garden waste collection service will resume from Monday (week commencing 27 April).

The Borough Council suspended its garden waste collection service on 23 March due to staff shortages arising from the coronavirus pandemic. Staff were diverted to ensure the refuse (black bin) and recycling (blue lidded bin) collections continued as normal throughout the pandemic.

However, this has been kept under constant review and staff levels are now in place to enable the service to be reintroduced.

Residents can check their bin collection day online.

All subscriptions have been automatically extended by up to two months for customers to cover the one month period the service was suspended.

Anyone who wishes to subscribe to the 20-21 garden waste service who hasn’t already done is encouraged to go online or call 01455 238141 if they don’t have internet access to ensure their service continues beyond the extension period.  The cost of the service is £24 a year. Customers are asked to allow at least 10 working days for the 20-21 sticker to arrive before presenting the garden waste bin.

The council apologises for the inconvenience and thanks customers for their patience during these challenging times.

The full press release can be found here.

Garden waste collections suspension continues

The Borough Council suspension of its garden waste collection service continues.

There will be no garden waste (brown lidded bin) collections from Monday 23 March until further notice as a result of severe staff shortages resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Refuse (black bin) and recycling (blue lidded bin) collections will continue as normal and are unaffected by this change.

Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council Director for Environmental Planning, Matt Bowers said: "These are unprecedented circumstances that have forced us to make this difficult decision in order to divert our resources to the more critical refuse and recycling collection service. We appreciate the inconvenience this will create for our residents and hope they understand these are exceptional circumstances which are beyond the council's control. We will keep this under continual review with the aim of restoring the service as soon as possible.

"We apologise for this inconvenience. In the meantime, we would encourage customers to manage their garden waste at home such as by home composting if they can."

Leader of the Council, Cllr Stuart Bray said "I can confirm that people will not be out of pocket. If this situation lasts more than a couple of weeks it is my intention to extend the current charging period to ensure people get at least 12 months they have paid for."

Customers are asked to bear with us at this difficult time.

Cadeby collision - failure to stop

At some point between the early hours of Thursday morning and Friday afternoon (January 9/10) it appears that a vehicle hit the front of Church Cottage on Main Street, causing considerable structural damage.

The point of impact, which has pushed back bricks bordering one of the upright wooden crucks,  appears too high to have been made by a car and more likely to have been caused by a lorry or truck.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Simon or Chris Freeman by emailing

Cadeby Church Restoration Work

Restoration & repair work is due to begin at Cadeby Church on Tuesday October 8.

The church may need to be closed for short periods for up to 3 weeks from the start of the works, if weather allows the work to go to plan.

It will include re-pointing exterior stonework, consolidation of window stonework, consolidation of the exterior churchyard wall and an annual roofing inspection.

The works are to be paid for with money raised at Cadeby Fete and other donations.

September 07, 2019

Cadeby Church CLOSED this week

Following our harvest service, Cadeby Church will now remain CLOSED  until at least the end of this week, while work is carried out to replace the main churchyard path.

The work is being carried out by JP Landscapes, who have made it very clear that the path must not be walked on at all while the new surface is being laid. (It will also require a short time to ‘cure’ once they have left the site on the final day of work).

If the weather is favourable, the work may be finished by Friday but it is possible that it might slip into the following week.

We will let you know as soon as the church is open again.

With thanks,

If you’re not able to attend the service but are able to make a contribution, the church is open daily, and there is a Foodbank donations box on the pew just inside the main door, which is used to collect for the cause throughout the year.

Monetary offerings made at the service will also be donated to the Foodbank.

Afterwards, you are invited to join us for a bring-and-share ploughman’s style buffet in the church hall.

There will be some bread, cheese, meats and quiche provided but please bring something to add to the spread, and whatever you would like to drink. Glasses will be available.

Cadeby Fete 2019

THE RAIN came down but Cadeby Fete had things covered, as the annual village church fundraiser sailed ahead despite the weather.

A fully-fitted tea and entertainment marquee, dog show tent and stalls under canvas meant fete-goers hardly felt a drop as they enjoyed all the traditional attractions, plus live music and a Pimm’s bar in the glorious grounds of Manor Farm on Saturday July 27.

The event, which was attended by Bosworth Benefice Priest in Charge, the Revd Mark Poskitt and new curate the Revd Ann Hall, raised £ 3,472 towards the ongoing maintenance and preservation of the Grade II* listed village church.

Unsold donations of good quality clothes and white elephant wares have been donated to Mind, the mental health charity, British Heart Foundation and the Air Ambulance service.

Cadeby Churchwarden Janet Hicklin, who opened the fete, said: “On behalf of Cadeby Church, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who made the fete possible and everyone who turned up and supported us in spite of the rain. We really do appreciate it.

“And special thanks must go to our amazing hosts, Jane and Louis Massarella, without whom none of it would have been possible.  We hope the rain will help their garden get back to looking lovely again very soon.”

A record-breaking raffle raised £961, with prizes donated by Cadeby and Market Bosworth-based businesses FP McCann, The Black Horse, Bosworth Hall Hotel, Co-op, Pink Gin Boutique, Lily & Mabel, as well as The Hercules Revived in Sutton Cheney, Conkers Discovery Centre and others.

A family fun dog show, which also included pedigree and puppy classes, was sponsored by Pingle Pets & K9 Kampus, on Ashby Road, with a visiting pooch from Yorkshire crowned Best in Show.

Attractions included a working display by Hinckley Model Railway Society, in a nod to Cadeby’s most famous former ‘Steam Vicar’, the Revd Teddy Boston, who appeared as The Fat Clergyman (not to be confused with The Fat Controller) in the Thomas the Tank Engine books.

The church in which Mr Boston served is opened daily by village volunteers who are currently raising money to replace the main church path with a more attractive and safer surface.

Advance Warning of Surface Dressing

From Leicestershire County Council

Surface Dressing Notification of Works.

The following roads in your Parish have surface dressing works programmed for this summer period, some may have already been completed.

Sutton Lane, Wood Lane and Church Lane – end of June.

Surface dressing is a preventative maintenance treatment that seals the road surface, extends the life of the road, reduces the occurrence of potholes and increases skid resistance by laying chippings on a bitumen “glue” and then rolling them into the surface.  Excess chippings are swept up and then compacted further by vehicular traffic.  Road markings are replaced afterwards.  The works are quick moving and, dependent upon the road length numerous sites can be completed in a day. The scheduling of the visit will depend upon the size of stone being used, and it may be necessary to visit your village at the beginning and end of the season.  The treatment is weather dependant, and whilst we will try to work to a programme some slippage will be expected for wet weather, and some roads may have to be reprogrammed for either later this year or for next year.  Residents of roads affected in the Parish will receive the attached leaflet 1 working day prior to the works so that arrangements can be made to move any vehicles.

Should you require any further information please contact CustomerServices@leics.gov.uk

Cadeby litter pick

Cadeby DCC (the volunteer group which cares for Cadeby Church) and Cadeby Parish Council joined forces to organise a community litter pick as part of the 2019 Great British Spring Clean campaign.

Twenty-four villagers, from school children to grandparents, turned out on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon to take part.

Armed with litter-picking sticks and hi-vis vests, courtesy of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, they collected enough rubbish to fill no fewer than 18 large sacks.

Finds included a duvet, a wrenched-open mini safe, hub caps and a bouquet of red roses….

Cadeby Churchwarden Janet Hicklin, who plotted the areas to be blitzed, said: “It was good to see the District Church Council and the Parish Council working together towards a common aim for the benefit of those who live here.

“Thank you to all who gave up their time to clear our paths, roadsides and hedgerows.

“Despite the uninviting weather, we had a really good turnout and gathered an amazing amount of litter.

“We had some unusual finds but it was disappointing that a lot of the discarded litter was alcohol bottles and cans.”

Everyone who took part was invited to the church hall for hot drinks and biscuits afterwards and the rubbish filled sacks were taken to the churchyard for collection by the borough council.

It is hoped to make the litter pick a twice-yearly event and organisers say they have already identified ways to improve things next time.

If residents do have concerns about their TV licence, they should contact TV Licensing using the details on their official website. If think you have been scammed please report it to Action Fraud using the button below or call them direct on 0800 123 2040.

Hinckley & Bosworth Community Transport Dial – a – Ride

Getting out and about is a normal part of everyday life.   Something that most of us take for granted.   But what if we lose our mobility either through a disability or age?   What if public transport isn’t accessible to us because we don’t live on a bus route or because we’ve lost the ability to use public transport without help?   What if we have no family or friends who can take us to all the places we need to go?   Shopping, lunch clubs, the doctor’s or the hairdressers or to visit our friends and family at home or in hospital?  Everyday events for most of us.  If we can no longer do these things life becomes very difficult and we may become depressed and lonely.

Warning about a new scam

From Ivan Ould, County Councillor for the Market Bosworth Division

Police are warning the public to be alert to a recent scam where people are approached by fake police officers and encouraged to take part in an undercover operation

Since November last year, Leicestershire Police has received eight reports of a scam of this nature and are warning the public to prevent further people falling victim to this crime.

The circumstances are that criminals are contacting members of the public, mainly by phone, claiming to be from the police or their bank's fraud team. The criminal goes on to claim they are investigating a fraud at a local bank where bank staff are involved with issuing fake bank notes and asks the victim for their help.

As part of the ongoing police investigation, the victim is asked to visit the same branch and withdraw a large amount of money from their own account, usually thousands of pounds, and hand this over to the police to be tested.

The victim is assured that they will have the money returned to their bank account however this never happens and the criminal gets away with the cash. The victim is told not to tell the bank the reasons around withdrawing the large sum if questioned, suspecting the cashier is only asking as they are in on the scam.

Paul Wenlock, from the Force's economic crime unit, said: "This is a scam which seems to be increasing, not just in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland but elsewhere across the country.

"The victim may feel that they are doing a public service by helping the police and for some it may seem exciting to part of an undercover operation, but this is not the case and it's simply a thief's way of enticing a victim so they can steal their money.

"It's important that those who are elderly or vulnerable who often fall prey to such type of scams are aware so we would encourage the public to share this message and help us prevent further victims of this crime.

Paul Wenlock added: "Police or banks will never ask anyone to take part in a fraud operation or withdraw or transfer money. Please be wary of any contact made from someone claiming to be from the police asking you to transfer money. If you are suspicious or concerned, please hang up the phone and contact either police, Action Fraud or your local bank."

Anyone who has been contacted in similar circumstances or has any information about the offences is asked to contact 101.

Cadeby Parish Council Meeting

Thursday January 18th 2018 7pm.

Cadeby Parish Council Meeting to be held in Cadeby Church hall. All welcome. Agenda attached

Agenda will be published on the village and parish council websites when available and will include discussion on the following Budget Proposals from Leicestershire County Council

Budget proposals – have your say

We’re urging parish councils to have their say on the council’s latest budget proposals - and would be grateful if you could circulate this to your councillors.

You can find out more about the four-year plan and give feedback until 21 January.

The proposals include:

•          Savings of £54m, including:

o          Recruiting more in-house foster carers

o          Refocusing ‘early help’ and prevention services

o          A new approach to road maintenance

o          Reducing support services further, including HR, ICT and finance

o          Reducing adult social care costs

•          Investment of £40m, mainly in children’s and adult social care due to rising demand

•          Council Tax rises of 3.99 per cent, including two per cent for adult social care - and then by 1.99 per cent in 2020/21 and 2021/22. Each one per cent raises £2.6m

•          Generating £3.5m by selling services to other organisations and investing in property – this income reduces the impact of reduced national funding

•          Spending £290m on roads, schools, broadband and more, supporting new homes and boosting the local economy

The consultation runs until 21 January – click here to send us your views

Thank you,

Leicestershire County Council

The foodbank offers three-day emergency food supplies and support to people in crisis.

If you would like to support the scheme, the box can be found in the pew to the right of the main church door and has a list on it of most urgently needed items. This list may change depending on the donations received centrally.

A list of required items is also available online at www.hinckleyarea.foodbank.org.ukor via this link https://hinckleyarea.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food

Cadeby Community Trust

In January of this year a new “Trust” was proposed to specifically raise external funding for the benefit of the Parish of Cadeby and its parishioners.

The idea was simple – to enable a representative group of the village to create a new organisation that could apply for grants and external funding, that a “political” organisation (ie Parish Council)  could not, that would be solely for the benefit of Cadeby its residents and infrastructure.

It was to bypass previous problems in the last two years where money raised for the hall refurbishment came under certain restrictions and caused delays.

The ”Cadeby Community Trust” was launched in April of this year after acceptance by HSBC of the Trusts declared constitution and proposed Trustee make up.

The current Trustees are as follows

Ian Smith – Chairman

Paul Brankin – Secretary

John Shepherd – Treasurer

Chris Freeman

Jonathan Lane – Parish Council representative

A N Other to be nominated by the Church.

The first application the Trust has made for grant support has been successful and has raised £6,300 from Big Lottery for further necessary work on the hall

On Wednesday June 14th the builders will commence

  1. Re pointing the crumbling masonry surrounding the external windows.

  1. Waterproofing the external gable end wall on Rectory Lane

  1. Internally building three cupboards to house the tables, chairs, books and other items within.

Once this is finished (which will take no more than two weeks) the painters and decorators move in and they will

  1. Completely remove any flaking/loose paint work.

  1. Seal all walls where damp was coming through.

  1. Decorate the entire interior of the hall including toilets and kitchen.

  1. Varnish the new toilet and kitchen door.

There is also sufficient funding to enable us to purchase a “moveable” information board to promote/record future village activities/events.

All work should be finished by the middle of July and it is not anticipated any such work will interrupt the preparations for the village fete.

Best wishes

Ian
